Words of wisdom from Warfield

January 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

We must not then as Christians assume an attitude of antagonism toward the truths of reason or to the truths of philosophy or the truths of science or the truths of history or the truths of criticism. As children of the Light, we must be careful to keep ourselves open to every ray of light. Let us then cultivate an attitude of courage as over against the investigations of the day. None should be more zealous in them than we are. None should be more quick to discern truth in every field, more hospitable to receive it, more loyal to follow it wherever it leads. It is not for Christians to be lukewarm in regard to the investigations and discoveries of the time. Rather, as followers of the Truth, indeed we can have no safety in science or in philosophy save in the arms of Truth. It is for us, therefore, as Christians to push investigation into the utmost, to be leaders in every science, to stand in the band of criticism, to be the first to catch in every field the voice of the Revealer of Truth who is also our Redeemer. All truth belongs to us as followers of Christ, the Truth. Let us at length enter into our inheritance.

    Steve,

Excellent quote! I may have to plop that permanently onto my blog (which has been updated with no less than 3 posts in 2 days)!

Glad you like it! I found this quote at the end of Chapter 8 of The Language of God by Francis Collins. This is an extraordinary book that deserves every Christian’s attention. I wish I could watch Gary DeMar’s face when (or if) he reads this book! :D

Collins book is on my to-read list. What is it about the book that would shock DeMar? Or should I just wait to read it?

DeMar is absolutely rabid in professing his hatred of the raving lunacy that is the theory of evolution (”Darwinism”). He really thinks that evolution = atheism, and works himself into a stupor over “evolution’s fatal fruit”. He has guests on his show that tear apart ridiculous evolutionist strawmen. He never even pretends that there is such a thing as theistic evolution: I know he must surely be aware of TE, but yet one of his most prized arguments against evolutionary theory is that it must be false because of “guilt by association” with atheism. He seems to think that if he can show that if people such as Dawkins misuse it, it is therefore itself part-and-parcel of godlessness. You should hear some of the arguments I’ve heard on his show. He holds up ID as wonderful, but seems to be unaware that the chief and most knowledgeable advocates of ID do not disagree with mainstream science’s so-called “goo to you” framework - they just have God doing a lot of the work miraculously.
