How big a deal is this evolution thing, anyway?

October 15th, 2009 | 15 Comments

I get the impression from some I know that I spend too much time worrying about the creation/evolution controversy. So in case you didn’t notice, I posted a new poll in my sidebar. Christians only on this one, please.

Should I provide a paraphrase for my Mondays with MacDonald quotes?

…what if I agree with all of the statements?

    1. It’s certainly not a waste of time, but I think we can ignore important issues if we get too focused.

    2. I’m not convinced it’s a super important issue because what turns out to be right doesn’t change my theological views really at all.

    3. So, I agree: Pick your battles. Personally, where I am right now, I much prefer the Reader’s Digest version so I can keep up with it all. I personally don’t want to take the time right now to dive into this all the way. But I’m glad there are those out there who are doing the research and reading and are willing to share it with me.

    4. This is certainly a hot topic that is causing trouble for many people, so I don’t think it can be ignored. I think we, as the Body of Christ (but not, necessarily, every member of it) head on.

    5. We do need to get our heads out of the sand. Unfortunately, I think many people would say that I still have my head down.

Great poll! It’s so good, I can’t choose one [laughing].

    Luke,
It sounds like you’re closest to number 3. It pretty much sums it up, right?

Edit: I changed the wording of the poll. I meant to rank it as a gradient from “Don’t even talk about it!” through to “For heaven’s sake, let’s talk about it!”, not just five different opinions. :)

Full disclosure: I chose number 3. I’m just not that threatened nor comforted by evolution. I definitely care about the issue. It’s just not the most important thing to me (and I realize there are pundits on both sides who’d like to sock me for saying such a thing.) ;)

I dunno. How would you say it?
It boils down to the polemics of curriculum, values, the meaning/purpose of life, truth …
How different is this from mankind’s ongoing dialogue with his existence?
Is there anything in this that is a difference in “kind” over a matter of “degree”?

    Steve,

Yes, I’m personally much closer to #3… but I do think that those, like you, who are interested and invested in this topic, it is important (#5). But, for now, I’ll stay a 3 [smile]. It’s possible I will “come around” and begin to feel this is a bigger deal someday.

I marked “critical” not just because Christian’s look silly with there hind ends flopping in the wind and their heads a foot or two deep in sand (they do!), but because there is looming out on the horizon a horrifyingly bloody battle within the ranks of American evangelicalism. It is painful to see people digging their heels in on this subject (now there’s a visual image, head’s buried, heels dug in) when you know how divisive this will be … and that due to monumental ignorance.

I had to pull the ‘Worse than unimportant’ lever.

This isn’t because what it is a ‘non-issue,’ but rather a statement of the current debate. Most of the current debate is ‘an utter distraction’. Much of the ‘visibility among those engaged in the general believer/unbeliever discussion’ is an ‘utter distraction.’ The only aspect that could be worse is if reality were only ‘important for some people’ and not other people.
